About Me

Creating A Special Holiday Meal For Family For years, I really struggled to get my family together, so when we were all in the same place for the holidays, I realized that I wanted to have a nice family dinner. I talked with everyone about what they wanted to bring, and then I decided to make a really special entree for everyone. I made my grandmother's roasted chicken and potatoes, and they all loved the approach to a family meal. I know how much food can bring people together, so I've made this blog all about holiday food and cooking. Read on to discover great tips about making the holidays fun with the right meals.

A Healthy Alternative To A Classic Fried Chicken Dinner

The classic fried chicken dinner is definitely one of the most delicious entrees out there, but it is not one of the most healthy. There are many people out there who are concerned about their blood pressure or cholesterol or are simply trying to lose weight. The traditional fried chicken dinner sides such as mashed potatoes and buttermilk biscuits are not going to help you lose weight. However, this doesn't mean that in order to keep your blood pressure and cholesterol in check you need to opt for a giant green salad without any dressing. No, there are ways in which you can enjoy chicken, potatoes, and biscuits without being unhealthy. Here is a good alternative dinner plan that uses those staples.

Baked Chicken Thigh: No Deep Frying!

One of the healthy alternatives to deep frying is to bake. When you bake chicken, you are going to end up with a moist, flavorful main course that also happens to be healthy. You can look for baked chicken thigh recipes that show you how to add healthy seasonings besides salt, and also will instruct you on how to marinate the chicken overnight in the fridge to give it even more flavor. The methods will involve baking in a dish in your oven with some healthy oils (like olive oil) and then ending up with succulent and healthy chicken for dinner.

Oven Roasted Potatoes: No Cream or Butter

Mashed potatoes are not the healthiest side dish. That's because they are normally loaded up with butter and other unhealthy additives. And don't even think about french fries, which are not diet friendly at all. What you should look into is a good oven roasted potato recipe. This is great when you're making baked chicken thigh because you can often bake them at the same time (and in the same dish). The oven roasted potatoes will be seasoned with similar healthy herbs and spices and will be a perfect accompaniment to your main dish.

Whole Grain Bread

As opposed to buttermilk biscuits, which are made with white flour, butter, or lard and are not great for your health, check out a recipe for a whole grain bread. Or, if you're not into baking bread, head over to your local gourmet food market and look at some of the healthy whole grain roll options that they offer. You will want to make sure to look for breads that are made with not just white flour but have whole grains in them.
